Zongzhi Chen is a Senior Technical Expert in Alibaba Cloud’s database team and currently serves as the head of RDS at Alibaba Cloud.

As a core member of the R&D team at Alibaba, he played a pivotal role in the development of PolarDB. His primary contribution involved designing and implementing PolarDB with specific optimizations for cloud storage, research which he documented in a series of papers titled CloudJump I: CloudJump:Optimizing Cloud Databases forCloud Storages, CloudJump II:CloudJump II: Optimizing Cloud Databases for Shared Storage, and CloudJump III:CloudJump III: Optimizing Cloud Databases for Tiered Storage.

Later, within the RDS team, he open-sourced MySQL-DuckDB (DuckDB as an in-MySQL column storage engine). He proposed a columnar storage engine specifically optimized for MySQL, which has since been deployed for large-scale use in production environments.

Zongzhi Chen graduated at TianJin University in China with a bachelor degree, and lives in Hangzhou now.
