Session Friday, Sep 11 11:00am – 12:00pm Matterhorn 2

Kubernetes Operators make it easy to deploy highly available databases, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. Behind every production-ready Database-as-a-Service lies a storage architecture that coordinates Persistent Volumes, CSI drivers, snapshots, object storage, backup engines, replication, and disaster recovery across multiple layers of the Kubernetes ecosystem.

In this talk, we’ll peel back the abstraction and explore how database operators interact with the storage layer throughout the entire database lifecycle—from provisioning and online volume expansion to backups, point-in-time recovery, cloning, and cross-region disaster recovery. Using PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB as concrete examples, we’ll identify where the operator’s responsibilities end, where Kubernetes storage controllers take over, and how these components work together to deliver a reliable DBaaS.
