MariaDB Is Only the Beginning: Building the Adoption Layer Around Open Source

MariaDB is much more than a database server, yet adoption is still often judged by what happens inside the server itself: performance, features, compatibility and releases. In practice, users adopt databases through a much wider ecosystem of extensions, cloud platforms, hosting providers, application frameworks, migration tools, documentation and complete solution architectures.

This talk shares MariaDB Foundation’s experience building that adoption layer around a mature open-source database. It looks at practical initiatives including plugin and extension discovery, Ecohub, solution stacks, contributor pathways, documentation and LLM discoverability, and partnerships with complementary open-source projects and infrastructure providers.

It also examines the harder questions behind ecosystem work. Which collaborations genuinely create adoption? Who owns and maintains integrations after launch? And how should open-source foundations balance user demand, partner interest, technical capacity and long-term sustainability?

Attendees will leave with a practical framework for identifying the ecosystem layers around their own projects, evaluating partnership opportunities, and turning a strong open-source technology into something users can discover, trust and deploy.
