Contribution Over Control: Open Source Responsibility in PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL grew from “the database people love” into one that organizations build their foundations on.

But open source is not sustained by admiration alone.

When companies depend on PostgreSQL for critical systems, they bring needs that do not automatically turn into community priorities: security, compliance, operational continuity, long term support and boring reliability at scale.

So what happens in that gap? How do real world requirements become useful, responsible contributions? How do we make sure missing capabilities do not push users toward proprietary escape hatches? And how do we keep open source products from becoming only the free entry point into an open core trap?

This is not a typical roadmap session. It is a look back at the last years of Percona’s investment in PostgreSQL and at how we challenged the status quo while respecting the product and community that make PostgreSQL exceptional.

I will share Percona’s approach to open source responsibility: listening to users, advocating for missing capabilities, investing where the ecosystem needs support and building in a way that keeps the solution open.

It is also a look ahead at why healthy ecosystems need companies that choose contribution over control.
