Congratulations, You're Now a MariaDB DBA

One day you’re a MySQL DBA. Comfortable. Fluent. You could tune a MySQL server in your sleep. Then someone hands you a MariaDB cluster and says “it’s the same thing, basically.” It is not, basically, the same thing today.

This talk reveals where MariaDB has moved the goalposts; replication, GTIDs, SQL Syntax, permissions, plugins, binlog and undo log handling, even JSON functions that look familiar right up until they don’t. And the slower, sneakier problem nobody mentions: MySQL skills decay. The MySQL instincts that stop firing correctly.

But this isn’t just a moan. Some of what MariaDB changed, we’d genuinely fight to keep. Bits where they clearly looked at MySQL, winced, and did it better. We’ll give credit where it’s due. Then, because moaning without a plan is just complaining, we hand over a wishlist of the features we’d steal straight from Oracle’s playbook if it were up to us, and why we’d want them backed by an actual vendor, not a forum thread and a prayer.
